Wyclef Jean Hits Out At Criticism Against Haiti

Wyclef Jean has hit back at a recent report by academics which claimed his home country, Haiti, was a “stepping stone” for HIV/AIDS to enter the United States.

The former Fugees rapper, who now records as a solo artist, branded the research by the University of Arizona as unhelpful.

It was reported yesterday (December 3rd) that Jean issued a statement saying: “AIDS is a worldwide illness that does not discriminate. Making Haiti the scapegoat only gets in the way of world progress in AIDS research.”

Jean was born in Haiti and lived there until his parents moved to New York when he was nine.

The Caribbean country has had a well-documented, troubled past. The first black republic in the world, it is now the poorest – and one of the most violent – countries in the western hemisphere.

It also has a massive HIV/AIDS problem, with an estimated 200,000 people affected by the disease. Jean has used some of his fortune to establish the charity Yele Haiti, which aims to bring humanitarian assistance to Haiti.

His statement continued: “World AIDS Day (December 1st) is an opportunity to evoke the progress and challenges that Haiti must confront in order to fight this epidemic, but also the recent news that unjustly targeted our country and showed serious prejudice.”

Akon Pleads Not Guilty To ‘Fan Throwing’ Incident

US rapper Akon has pleased not guilty to criminal charges relating to an incident where he threw a fan into the audience at a show earlier this year.

Akon appeared briefly at the hearing yesterday (December 3rd) in Fishkill, America, where he was charged with misdemeanour of endangering the welfare of a minor and second degree harassment.

A fan alleges that she suffered concussion after a boy that the rapper threw off stage hit her at an outdoor event on June 3rd.

The rapper was told yesterday that his lawyer can stand in for him at future hearings. The case has been adjourned until January, reports AP.

Akon’s actions were caught on video and published on the video sharing website YouTube.

In a statement written by the rapper’s lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, it’s said that Akon “deeply regrets” the incident.

Amy Winehouse To Escape Camden Hideout 

Amy Winehouse is set to move from her current London home in a bid to escape the bad memories of her husband, according to reports.

Winehouse is understood to have spent less time at the property in Camden since her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, was arrested and charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice last month.

The Sun claims that the singer has been spending most of her time in Bow, East-London, where she was spotted on the weekend stumbling around in just a bra and jeans.

“She has preferred being in the East End since Blake was arrested. The Camden house holds a lot of bad memories — it was the scene of her drug overdose and is full of reminders of Blake,” a ‘friend’ told the Sun.

“She has hardly been back there since the overdose. Now, with Blake in prison, she can hardly bring herself to walk through the door. So she’s bought a place in East London and plans to sell the Camden pad.”

Winehouse cancelled all her touring commitments for the remainder of 2007 last month under the advice of doctors.

Freeway Explains New Album’s Kanye/Just Blaze Void

While Kanye West and Just Blaze combined for 12 songs off Freeway’s debut, Philadelphia Freeway, the two super producers are noticeably absent from his sophomore set, Free At Last. The Philadelphia emcee recently addressed the West/Blaze void.

“I’m a give you a scenario. Me and you work together. You’re the artist. I’m the producer. I do 12 songs on your album. We got a great chemistry together. When the next album comes around, of course I’ma reach out to work with you. And you gon’ reach out to work with me, and If I don’t work with you, you gon feel some type of way,” Free explained to BET.com. “Like, I really feel some type of way. And I ain’t sh-tng on Just. VH1’s `Salt-N-Pepa Show’ tackles Jena 6

NEW YORK – Salt-N-Pepa are still pushing it.

Cheryl “Salt” James was determined to march for racial equality in Jena, La., last September, whether or not cameras from her VH1 reality series, “The Salt-N-Pepa Show,” followed her.

“I just felt like as a mom, I wanted to be there,” James told The Associated Press in a recent phone interview.

“The Salt-N-Pepa Show” documents the reunion of James and her former partner, Sandy “Pepa” Denton. James left the groundbreaking female rap group in 2002.

James, Denton, their families and reality TV crew journeyed for two days by tour bus to march alongside thousands of protesters and meet the families of the Jena Six, six black teens accused of beating a white high school student.

Their trip was to be featured in an episode of “The Salt-N-Pepa Show” airing Monday night (10 p.m. EST).

James didn’t think VH1, the cable network home of reality TV fare such as “I Love New York 2″ and “America’s Most Smartest Model,” would be interested in capturing such an experience.

“I was surprised that they wanted to come and was very, very happy about it,” she told the AP. “It’s nice to entertain, but it’s also nice to use your platform to bring awareness to different issues.”

Upcoming episodes feature James and Denton working out their differences with life coach Iyanla Vanzant and performing at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. The series concludes Dec. 2.

James – who’s “more open than ever” to recording a new album with Denton – said VH1 has ordered a second season of their show.

Kylie Minogue was humiliated after waxwork specialists Madame Tussauds debuted a sculpture of the singer in a racy position. 50 Cent offers Kanye condolences

NEW YORK – 50 Cent said Kayne West is making the right decision by returning to the stage after his mother’s sudden death.

“That’s really an unfortunate situation and I hope he can work his way through it,” 50 told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday. “It’s good to see him actually touring: You can work your way back into a comfortable space where you can deal with those situations.”

West’s 58-year-old mother and manager, Donda West, died Nov. 10 after she stopped breathing at her home. She died at home after recently undergoing plastic surgery; a cause of death has yet to be determined.

The rapper had a particularly close relationship with his mother, and dedicated a song to her on his second album; earlier this week, he broke down in tears as he attempted to sing “Hey Mama” at a concert in Europe.

50 Cent said his friend and G-Unit artist Lloyd Banks dealt with a similar situation when his father died while Banks was on tour. 50 thought Banks should put his focus on work so he wouldn’t be paralyzed by grief.

“I was telling him, `You need to go back and do what you need to do,’ and he thought maybe I was a little insensitive,” 50 Cent said. “But I can definitely understand how that’s a huge loss, and how that would be, and then (Kanye’s) relationship with his mom had a lot more depth to it than a lot of people’s. He was real close to his mom.

“I hope that he can work his through his way through it … if you’re active, you’ll find reasons to smile, reasons to be happy.”

50 Cent and West had a much publicized, and much-hyped sales battle a couple of months ago when West’s “Graduation” and 50’s “Curtis” albums were released the same day; West’s CD outsold 50’s handily.

Despite the trash talk he delivered before both album’s were released, 50 says he has never considered West a rival.

“He’s a talented artist. I actually sat with him during the creation of `Curtis’ while he was creating his new album,” he said. “I never viewed him as an actual enemy; what I was trying to do is build a competition. “

P. Diddy ‘on the mend’

P. Diddy is “on the mend” after having surgery to fix his broken foot. The rapper – who injured himself last week – underwent surgery to fix the problem, but it is not known how the accident happened.

Diddy’s representative said: “He did have routine foot surgery, but I’m not getting into specifics. It was a scheduled operation. He’s doing great and he’s on the mend.”

The injury is not expected to affect the rap star’s work schedule and there is unlikely to be any long-term damage.

Despite the common assumption that nothing can be done for a broken foot, surgery can help set the bones in place and can prevent future problems which may lead to arthritis and osteoarthritis.

London’s Premier Foot and Ankle Centre said: “The foot is a unique and complex mechanical structure that requires expert clinical expertise in its management.”
